Dear Hearts,
Several years ago, a survey was done that asked individuals what it was they wanted most from others. The surprising answer was they wanted someone to listen to them.
There are many ways to listen. In the busyness of our society, and especially of our days right now, we often listen with only half of our attention on what the person is saying while the other half of our attention continue with the task at hand…and neither is done wholeheartedly.
Truly listening to another is spiritual practice that takes discipline. It is spiritual practice because in whole heartedly listening we get to validate another individual and the value of what they are saying and who they are.
Spiritual listening requires listening with our entire being. That means that we process the words through our mind while allowing our hearts to open in non-judgment. It requires stillness of body so that we listen in such a way that every part of our body is alert to what is being said. It requires the great discipline of a quiet mind that is not trying to formulate our response.
Each of us is here to allow the love, the compassion, the grace and the blessings of God to flow through us to others. There is no more noble a way to do this than in truly listening to another.
Today, if someone wants to talk to us…will we be able to answer the call by giving the gift of our precious time, our open hearts and quiet minds? If so, it is yet another way for us to show up for God.
